The skin is the largest organ of your body. It’s job is to protect against external harms such as bumping into something, sharp objects, and even rain. The skin protects your blood vessels, muscles, tendons, and your bones. Other external harms include bacteria and UV radiation. The skin serves other functions such as regulating body temperature, managing certain nutrient levels, and water loss.
Your skin is a flexible shield.
There are a lot of things that we put on our skin that can enter the bloodstream due to absorption. Our bodies are so efficient that they are able to filter some toxins out. However, over time bioaccumulation occurs.
What is bioaccumulation?
Bioaccumulation was explained to me by numerous healthcare professionals like this: Some of your organs act like filters for the body. They include your liver, kidneys, lymph system, and spleen. These organs are like buckets. They are able to filter out the junk, but over time, some items settle to the bottom of the bucket. As the bucket continues to fill, you get sicker. You may not even notice it. However, when that bucket becomes full and starts to overflow, it will be very apparent. Your body becomes overly stressed because it cannot filter the toxins in the bucket fast enough. The symptoms of toxicity are different for everyone. They can include hormone fluctuations, hair loss, acne, blurry vision, brain fog, fatigue, indigestion, weight gain, sores and rashes on the body, and many others. Some believe this is the beginning of where great disease and cancer forms.
What do I do?
Now, before everyone freaks out, I need you to remember that we are all individuals. We each have an individualized threshold or bucket size of what our body can handle. It is also important to know that the bucket is being filled and filtered over a period of time. The danger is when the body can no longer filter and the toxins begin spilling out into other areas of the body. In this example of toxins, the small sustained changes over time yield DISASTROUS results. It took my body almost 8 months of using Product X to overflow my bucket. Read my story here or watch a recorded webinar I did on the subject.
So, what are some ways we can make sure our organs are filtering?
- Drink more water
- Get 7-9 hours of sleep a night
- Practice meditation or prayer
- Eat organic natural foods designed to filter toxins
- Supplement with high quality vitamins
- Chiropractic care
- Detox under a functional medicine, holistic, or natural practitioner. (Not a juice cleanse.)
What is toxic to our bodies?
- Sugar, grains, dairy, and alcohol
- Processed foods
- Food dyes
- Synthetic fragrances
- Chemical additives
- Poisons of any kind (Think household or outdoor ones you may breath in or get on your skin)
- Toxic cleaning chemicals
- Many other elemental toxins we come into contact with
Our skin is an amazing organ. It protects us from having our blood vessels spill all over the place, it keeps us warm, and keeps the germs and UV rays off of us.
However, if we’re not careful of what we put ON our body, it will end up IN our body.
Benefits to skin absorption
There are benefits to the skin’s absorption ability. Doctors and scientists have created hormone patches and creams that are more effective and less invasive than a shot or pill. Hormone patches can do wonders for women who want to get pregnant or to prevent pregnancy without the hassle of a pill or painful shot. Smokers are able to wear a nicotine patch so they do not go into such severe withdrawls when they are trying to quit smoking. The medical science that is available to us is amazing, however we have to make sure we apply the same knowledge to our day to day items.
This list of toxic chemicals that should NEVER be used if you can avoid them and are not in the EVERskin care line.
Europe has banned these ingredients and has a stricter policy on skincare and chemical uses. Some shampoos, conditioners, hair care products, soaps, lipsticks, makeup, lotions, creams, nail polish, nail polish remover, and many other products contain these ingredients. This is just the tip of the iceberg.
Many of our day to day products contain toxic chemicals and the FDA has only banned eleven items from our skin care. You can find the full list and article here. It is important to make an informed decision. It can be very overwhelming to try and switch to cleaner more natural products. This is where my philosophy on “small sustainable changes” is important.
Changing your personal care products for safer ones
The first thing you should do is look at the skin care products you and your family use every day. Start with your face regimens and lotions. Take a look at the chemicals. If any of the items in them are on the NEVER EVER list, they should be replaced. This is the face regimen I recommend. EVERskin care is safe for men, women, and children. There are some safe lotions you can find at your local big box stores, just check the ingredient list. In our family we will often use straight coconut oil on our skin. As a result, not only is it safe for your skin, but when absorbed, it actually adds nutrients to your body.
So what do you do if you think you are toxic or are having an allergic reaction to something in your environment?
Contact your medical provider. You must advocate for yourself. Tests you want to ask for include heavy metal toxins, environmental toxins, lymphatic drainage, kidney, and liver function. If you think you have specific exposure to something, make sure to mention this to your doctor or practitioner.
Not all toxicity tests are the same.
Toxins are be tested by blood, urine, saliva, and non-traditional routes. Holistic, natural, and functional medical providers may test through electrical biomarkers, tongue testing, and other non-traditional means. I personally have my blood tested and compare it to non-traditional means. Most non-traditional testing will give a greater detail of toxicity levels.
After you get your results, you will be able to make more informed decisions on how to proceed.
As always, start small. Small sustainable changes over a period of time will yield EPIC results.
