Last time, I wrote about making small changes to help you relax which will improve your mental wellness, today we talk supplements.
Adding supplements to your diet is a great way to yield amazing healthy results. These results may not show any physical changes for you, but will make a huge difference in how your organs and hormones function.
The way food is grown in the modern world robs our food of a large number of the beneficial nutrients that our bodies require. We can no longer expect that our nutritional needs can be met by a balanced diet no matter how hard we try. However, not all supplements are created equal. Many supplements have fillers that are not healthy in them. When looking at multi-vitamins for our children, the second ingredient in one of the brands was sugar.
There is no way that a supplement that has the second ingredient listed as sugar is going to make it into my house.
I urge you to do your research on which brands of vitamins are the greatest quality, which includes a high absorption rate. Some bodies are unable to absorb the actual vitamin and it will come out the other side completely intact! Vitamins and supplements are created in liquid form, a tincture, powder, and some are even absorbed through the skin.
What to look for in your supplements
A high quality vitamin will be free of artificial colors and preservatives. These are just extra junk your body doesn’t need. Many vitamins can be found with natural flavors and colors to make them more palatable for kids. People with food allergies are already aware that some vitamins and supplements may contain common allergens such as soy, wheat, dairy, and gluten. If you are going on any elimination diet, you should also check your supplements to make sure they are clear of ingredients you may be sensitive to.
Some vitamins require the help or boost of another mineral in order to increase absorption. The most common one that comes to mind is iron. It is best to take Vitamin C along with iron to ensure that the body is absorbing as much iron as possible. Some vitamins are fat soluble and should be taken with meals or snacks that contain a healthy fat. These vitamins include, but are not limited to vitamins A, D, E, and K. Be sure to ask your doctor or pharmacist what vitamins should be taken together to increase its effectiveness.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help when choosing a supplement
A functional medicine doctor, naturopathic doctor, and many small health food stores are great resources to find out what vitamins are the highest quality. You should have bloodworm done to determine which vitamins you are deficient in. In our family, we drink Shakeology as our vitamin supplement. I’ll have a post that discusses the benefits of Shakeology in the near future. I can directly link my improved blood work to Shakeology!
Do you regularly supplement your nutrition with vitamins?
Do you know what vitamins you should be taking? Have you read the labels?
What alarming things have you realized about your vitamins?
I will finish up this series with discussing the importance of brain and spinal function in the next post.
